The fuel system pressure must be relieved before beginning the procedure, which is much easier to perform if the fuel tank is empty. The fuel pump/fuel gauge sending unit must be removed, and the fuel must be siphoned from the tank. The parking brake lever must be in the released position, the rear wheel lug nuts must be loosened, the vehicle must be raised and placed securely on jackstands, and the rear wheels must be removed. On SULEV models, the fuel tank covers must be removed. The exhaust system must be disconnected from the rear mounting flange of the catalytic converter all the way back to the muffler, and the fuel filler neck hose and the fuel tank vapor hose must be disconnected and inspected for cracks, tears and other deterioration. On SULEV four-cylinder models, the quick-connect fittings for the fuel filler neck, the fuel tank vapor recirculation hose and the fuel tank vapor signal hose must be disconnected and inspected. The vapor line fitting must be disconnected from the EVAP canister, and the quick-connect fitting for the fuel line must be disconnected. The two rear wheel speed sensors must be disconnected, and on models with rear drum brakes, the brake hoses must be disconnected from the metal brake line, the bolts that attach the brake backing plates to the rear knuckles must be removed, and the parking brake cables must be disconnected from the rear parking brake levers. On models with rear disc brakes, the parking brake cables must be disconnected from the rear calipers, the rear brake caliper bolts must be removed and the calipers must be removed from the rear knuckles, the brake hose brackets must be detached from the rear knuckles, and the calipers must be hung from the coil springs. The lower shock absorber mounting bolts must be removed, the parking brake cable brackets must be detached, the rear suspension sub frame mounting bolts must be removed, and the fuel tank must be lifted out of the sub frame. Installation is the reverse of removal, and all bolts must be tightened to the specified torque.
