If the CV joints are worn, indicating the need for an overhaul due to torn boots, explore all options before starting the job. Complete rebuilt CV boots are available on an exchange basis. If you choose to rebuild a CV joint, check the cost and availability of parts before disassembly. Some auto parts stores offer "split" type replacement boots, which can be installed without removing the CV joint. However, it's recommended to remove the CV joint and clean it to ensure it's free from contaminants. To repair:Remove the CV joint from the vehicle.Mount the CV joint in a vise with protection to avoid damage.Cut off both boot clamps and slide the boot towards the center.Scribe or paint alignment marks on the outer race and the tri-pot bearing assembly and remove the outer race.Remove the snap-ring from the axleshaft, then mark the relationship of the tri-pot bearing to the axleshaft.Secure bearing rollers with tape, remove the tri-pot bearing assembly from the axleshaft, then remove the stop-ring.Clean old grease from the outer race and the tri-pot. Disassemble the tri-pot, clean the needle bearings with solvent.Check rollers, tri-pot, bearings, and outer race for damage. Replace if necessary.Wrap axleshaft splines with tape, slide the boot on, remove the tape, and slide the inner snap-ring into place.Align the previously made marks and tap the tri-pot assembly onto the axleshaft.Apply grease to hold the needle bearings in place during reassembly. Ensure each roller is on its original post.Pack the outer race with half of the grease from the new boot and install the outer race. Ensure alignment marks are in sync.Seat the boot in its grooves, then adjust the CV joint length.Equalize pressure in the boot by inserting a blunt screwdriver between the boot and outer race. Be careful not to damage the boot.Install and tighten new boot clamps.Remove the inner CV joint and disassemble it using the steps mentioned above.If the CV joint has a dynamic damper, mark its position, cut the clamp, and remove it. Remove the boot clamps from the outer CV joint and slide the boot off. Note that the outer CV joint can't be disassembled or removed from the shaft.Clean both inner and outer CV joints thoroughly.Inspect bearing surfaces for wear. Replace the CV joint if necessary.Slide the new outer boot onto the axleshaft. Use tape to protect the splines. Add grease to the outer joint and boot, then secure with new clamps.If the driveaxle had a dynamic damper, reposition it according to the previous mark and secure it with a new clamp.Clean, reassemble the inner CV joint, and then reinstall the driveaxle.

To remove the tri-pot assembly from the front drive axle's inner CV joint, you should use a hammer and brass drift. Before doing so, mark the joint housing's relationship to the tri-pot.
