Detach the cable from the negative terminal of the battery and clearly label and then disconnect the electrical connectors from the alternator.

Remove the alternator from the vehicle, scribe or paint marks on the front and rear end frame housings of the alternator to facilitate reassembly, remove the nut retaining the pulley to the rotor shaft and remove the pulley, remove the four through-bolts holding the front and rear covers together, then separate the rear cover assembly from the front cover, remove the rotor, remove the nuts retaining the stator, then separate the stator and diode assembly from the end frame, remove the screws attaching the regulator and the brush holder to the diode assembly and remove the brush holder and regulator, remove the diode assembly from the stator, check the rotor for an open between the two slip rings, check for opens between the center terminal and each end terminal of the stator windings, check for a grounded stator winding between each stator terminal and the frame, start the checks on the diode assembly by touching one probe (+) of the ohmmeter on the diode plate to the other probe on one of the other designated diode terminals (-), replace the alternator brushes, install the components in the reverse order of removal, noting the following: before installing the brush holder, push the brushes into the holder and slip a straightened paper clip or other suitable pin through the hole in the brush holder to hold the brushes in a retracted position, after the front and rear end frames have been bolted together, remove the paper clip.
