If you want to replace the fuel filter, wash the fuel inlet strainer thoroughly in clean solvent, dry it off and inspect it for tears, cracks, clogging any other damage. If the strainer is damaged or worn, replace it, be sure to use a new retaining washer when installing the strainer. Before installing the fuel pump access cover, be sure to connect the cable to the negative battery terminal, start the engine and check for fuel leaks at the pump fuel line connection. If there are no leaks, install the access cover and the trunk carpet.
