The knock sensor detects abnormal vibration in the engine, producing an AC output voltage which increases with the severity of the knock. This signal is fed into the PCM and the timing is retarded up to 10 degrees to compensate for severe detonation. On 3.2L engines, the knock sensor is located in the top of the block, under the intake manifold. On 2.2L engines, the knock sensor is located on the right (passenger) side of the engine block, just behind the right engine mount. A special scan tool is needed to check the knock sensor and the knock sensor circuit, and it is recommended to take the vehicle to a dealer service department for this check. To replace the sensor, first disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. For a 3.2L engine, drain the cooling system, remove the engine cover and the air intake plenum, unplug the electrical connector from the knock sensor, and unscrew the sensor from the engine block. Installation is the reverse of removal, with the knock sensor tightened to the torque. For a 2.2L engine, trace the electrical lead from the knock sensor to the electrical connector, which is located between the alternator and the engine, and unplug the connector. Remove the knock sensor retaining bolt and the knock sensor. Installation is the reverse of removal, with the knock sensor retaining bolt tightened securely.
