Q:
How do you remove and install a fuel pump/fuel level sending unit module in a Honda Ridgeline? Posted by Customer
A:
Detach the cable from the negative battery terminal. Relieve the fuel system pressure. Remove the driver's side second-row seat, then remove the carpet from the indicated area underneath. There are two sets of perforations in the carpeting under the seat, The smaller one(which might already be cut), is the flap for accessing the electrical connection for the fuel pump/fuel level sending unit. The larger perforations for removing the fuel pump/fuel level sending unit. Cut along the larger perforation and peel back the flap. For 2001 and 2002 Acura and 2003 and 2004 Honda models, remove the fuel pump access cover screws and remove the fuel pump access cover. Disconnect the fuel pump/fuel level sending unit electrical connector. Disconnect the quick-connect fittings for the fuel supply and return lines and set the fuel lines aside, Be sure to cover the ends of the fittings with plastic bags to prevent dirt and moisture from entering the system. Remove the fuel pump/fuel level sending unit locknut. Remove the fuel pump/fuel level sending unit module from the tank. Be sure to inspect the seal at the top of the module for cracks tears and deterioration if it's damaged, replace it. When installing the fuel pump/fuel level sending unit module install the seal in the hole first. Installation is the reverse of removal. Before installing the access plate, carpeting and seat, reconnect the cable to the negative terminal of the battery, start the engine and check for fuel leaks. For 2003 and later Acura and 2005 and later Honda models, peel off the rubber weather seal grommet from the fuel pump access cover and disconnect the electrical connector from the fuel pump/fuel level sending unit. Remove the fuel pump access cover screws then remove the access cover. Disconnect the fuel line quick-connect fitting from the fuel pump. Be sure to cover the ends of the fitting with plastic bags to prevent dirt and moisture from entering the system. Unscrew the big locknut that secures the fuel pump to the tank. Place some clean shop rags around the access hole, then remove the fuel pump/fuel level sending unit module from the fuel tank. Installation is the reverse of removal. When installing the fuel pump/fuel level sending unit module install the seal in the hole first. Before installing the access plate, carpeting and seat, reconnect the cable to the negative terminal of the battery, start the engine and check for fuel leaks.

Q:
How to check the Fuel Pump and fuel pressure? Posted by Customer
A:
To verify fuel in the tank, listen for the fuel pump by turning the ignition switch to ON. If unclear, open the fuel filler neck cap and have someone turn the ignition while you listen at the neck. For 2001 and 2002 Acura and 2003 and 2004 Honda models, use a fuel pressure gauge for high pressure. Disconnect the negative battery terminal, detach the fuel supply line from the firewall, and tee the gauge into this system. After reconnecting the battery, turn the ignition to ON, and check the pressure on the gauge once the engine is at its operating temperature. If pressure doesn't rise upon vacuum line disconnection from the regulator, check vacuum at the hose. For low indicated fuel pressure, inspect fuel lines, and consider replacing the fuel filter, integral to the fuel pump/level sending unit assembly. If the pressure remains low, potential issues include leaking fuel injectors or a faulty fuel pump. Upon completing tests, disconnect the battery terminal, remove the pressure test setup, and reconnect the fuel supply line. For 2003 and later Acura and 2005 and later Honda models, a special adapter is required to measure pressure. Disconnect the negative battery terminal, separate the fuel supply line quick-connect fitting on the firewall, and attach the fuel pressure gauge. Reconnect the battery, turn the ignition to ON, and evaluate the pressure when the engine is warmed up. If the pressure is not within range, inspect fuel lines, replace the fuel filter if necessary, and possibly replace the fuel pressure regulator. After testing, relieve fuel pressure, disconnect the battery terminal, remove the testing rig, and reattach the fuel supply line. Finally, start the engine and inspect for fuel leaks.

Q:
How to replace and reinstall a fuel pump/Fuel Filter/fuel level sending unit module in Honda Ridgeline? Posted by Customer
A:
Relieve the system fuel pressure. Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. Remove the fuel pump/fuel level sending unit from the fuel tank then place the fuel pump/fuel level sending unit module on a clean workbench. For 2001 and 2002 Acura and 2003 and 2004 Honda models: Disconnect the return hose from the case. Disconnect the electrical connectors for the fuel pump and for the fuel level sending unit. Separate the bracket and the case. Disconnect the ground wire from its terminal on the side of the fuel filter housing. Disconnect the fuel filter outlet tube from the fuel filter housing. Remove the pump retainer. Remove the rubber isolator. Separate the fuel pump from the fuel filter housing. Remove the fuel inlet "sock” (strainer) from the fuel pump. Remove the fuel level sending unit from the case. Before reassembling the fuel pump, wash the fuel strainer thoroughly in clean solvent; if it's impossible to clean, replace it. When installing the strainer on the fuel pump, use a new retainer and make sure it's firmly seated. Before installing the fuel pump in the fuel filter housing, inspect the condition of the fuel filter inlet and outlet O-rings; if either O-ring is cracked, torn, or deteriorated, replace it. Also, ensure the spacer at the top of the pump is in place. This spacer ensures a tight fit between the pump outlet pipe and the fuel filter inlet O-ring. If the spacer is damaged or missing, replace it. Reassemble, then start the engine and check for fuel leaks at the pump fuel line connections. For 2003 and later Acura and 2005 and later Honda models: Disconnect the electrical connector for the fuel level sending unit then detach the fuel level sending unit from the fuel filter housing. Remove the case from the fuel pump/fuel filter housing. Disconnect the fuel supply line fitting from the fuel pump/fuel filter housing. Remove and discard the O-ring for the fuel supply line fitting. Disconnect the electrical connectors for the fuel pump wiring harness and detach the pump ground wire from the fuel pump/fuel filter housing. Remove the fuel pressure regulator housing, then disconnect the fuel pump ground wire from the regulator housing. Remove the fuel pressure regulator retaining clip and pull the regulator out of the housing. Remove and discard the fuel pressure regulator O-rings. Inspect the condition of the spacer and the mesh filter screen. If either is damaged, replace it. Remove the fuel pump. Remove and discard the fuel pump O-ring inside the upper end of the pump recess. Remove the suction filter retainer clip and remove the suction filter from the fuel pump. Before reassembling, wash the fuel strainer thoroughly in clean solvent. If it's impossible to clean, replace it. Reassemble, using new O-rings and a new retainer clip on the strainer. Once reassembly is complete, start the engine and check for fuel leaks at the pump fuel line connections.
