Honda's employ a leading/trailing type of drum brake, in which two curved brake shoes are supported by an anchor plate and wheel cylinder. When the brake pedal is depressed, hydraulic pressure is delivered to the wheel cylinder, forcing the shoes against the drum to create friction and slow or stop the vehicle. To remove the drum, raise and safely support the vehicle, remove the rear wheel and tire assembly, and then remove the drum. Inspect the drum for cracks and the inner surface of the shoe for excessive wear and damage. To remove the shoes, raise and safely support the vehicle, remove the wheel and tire assemblies and the brake drums, remove the tension pins, lower the brake shoe assembly and remove the lower return spring, disconnect the parking brake cable from the lever, remove the upper return spring, self-adjuster lever and self-adjuster spring, and separate the brake shoes. To remove the wheel cylinder, raise and support the vehicle safely, remove the tire and wheel assemblies, remove the brake drum and shoes, disconnect the parking brake cable and brake lines from the backing plate, and remove the two wheel cylinder-to-backing plate nuts and the wheel cylinder. When assembling, apply a thin coat of grease to the grooves of the wheel cylinder piston and the sliding surfaces of the backing plate, and apply a coat of brake fluid to the pistons, piston cup and cylinder walls.
