Vehicles equipped with an automatic transaxle have an interlock system to prevent unintentional shifting, consisting of two subsystems: a shift lock system and a key interlock system. The key interlock system prevents the ignition key from being removed from the ignition switch unless the shift lever is in the Park position, and the shift lock system prevents the shift lever from moving from the Park position into the Reverse or Drive positions unless the brake pedal is depressed. To check the key interlock solenoid, remove the lower instrument panel and knee bolster, unplug the 7-pin connector from the main wire harness, and check for continuity between the terminals in each switch position. To check the shift lock solenoid, remove the console, unplug the three-pin connector for the shift lock solenoid from the dashboard wiring harness, and use a pair of jumper wires to moment!3rily touch a positive battery lead to the A terminal of the three-pin connector and a negative lead to the B terminal. If the solenoid doesn't operate, replace it, and if it does operate, adjust the solenoid at its off and On positions and check the clearance between the shift lock lever and the lock pin groove. With the solenoid turned off, note whether or not the lock pin is blocked by the shift lock lever and readjust the position of the shift lock solenoid until it is.
