Detach the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. If you can reach them, disconnect the battery cable and the solenoid connector from the starter motor solenoid. On some engines, such as the 2.2L four-cylinder engine, the solenoid terminals are very difficult to reach while the starter is installed; it's actually easier to unbolt the starter, pull it out and then disconnect the starter cables. Remove the starter motor mounting bolts and detach the starter from the engine. To remove the starter from the 3.1L V6 engine, detach the electrical wires from the solenoid terminals, then remove both mounting bolts. Lower starter mounting bolt on the 2.2L four-cylinder engine. Upper starter mounting bolt on the 2.2L four-cylinder engine. Depending upon the year and engine type, the starter/solenoid assembly may be mounted above the transmission or below the intake manifold. On some models it may be necessary to remove the exhaust system to make room for the starter assembly to pass between the engine and chassis. Make sure the engine is completely cool before working on the exhaust system. If you haven't yet disconnected the battery cable and solenoid lead, do so now. If you were unable to disconnect the battery cable and the solenoid lead while the starter motor was still bolted in place, pull the starter out far enough to access the terminals and disconnect both wires. Installation is the reverse of removal.

The drive assembly in the starter motor is slipping and the starter motor must be replaced.
