Before assuming the thermostat is to blame for a cooling system problem, check the coolant level, drivebelt tension (four-cylinder engines only) and temperature gauge operation. If the engine seems to be taking a long time to warm up, replace the thermostat with a new one. If the engine runs hot, the thermostat is probably stuck closed, preventing the coolant inside the engine from escaping to the radiator. Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal, remove the battery and air filter housing (2013 and later models), drain the cooling system, follow the lower radiator hose to the engine to locate the thermostat housing cover, remove the quick connect fitting (four-cylinder engines) or loosen the hose clamp (V6 engines), take note of how the thermostat is installed, remove the thermostat housing cover bolts and cover, remove all traces of the old seal from the mating surfaces, install a new seal (V6 models) or O-ring (four-cylinder engines), install the thermostat, install the thermostat housing cover, reattach the hose and tighten the hose clamp, refill the cooling system, reconnect the battery, start the engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature, then check for leaks and proper thermostat operation.
