The Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) system reduces hydrocarbon emissions by scavenging crankcase vapors. It does this by circulating fresh air from the air intake duct into and through the crankcase, where it mixes with blow-by gases before being drawn by intake manifold vacuum through a PCV valve to the intake manifold. To inspect the PCV system, start the engine and allow it to warm up. With the engine idling, pinch off the crankcase ventilation hose and verify that the PCV valve makes a clicking sound. If there is no clicking sound, the crankcase ventilation hose might be clogged or punctured. To replace the components, loosen the hose clamps at both ends of the fresh air inlet hose and the crankcase ventilation hose, disconnect them from the air intake duct and the intake manifold, unscrew the PCV valve, remove and discard the PCV valve washer, and install the new components. On V6 models, remove the PCV valve retaining bolt and remove the PCV valve, and remove and discard the old PCV valve O-rings. Be sure to use new O-rings and tighten the PCV valve securely.
