Q:
What is the function and maintenance procedure for the Evaporative Emissions Control (EVAP) system,Canister Purge Valve and Vapor Canister in Honda Crosstour? Posted by Customer
A:
The Evaporative Emissions Control (EVAP) system prevents fuel system vapors, which contain unburned hydrocarbons, from escaping into the atmosphere. On warm days, these vapors expand in the fuel tank until a certain pressure threshold is reached. These vapors then route through an EVAP two-way valve to an EVAP canister for temporary storage. When conditions such as engine warmth, vehicle speed, and load on the engine are met, the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) opens the canister purge valve, allowing these vapors to enter the intake manifold. In the intake manifold, these vapors mix with incoming air and are burnt in the combustion chambers. The EVAP system, located primarily beneath the vehicle, comprises the EVAP canister, which stores these vapors, the canister vent shut valve which allows air in during purging, and the fuel tank pressure sensor that monitors fuel tank pressure and transmits this data to the PCM. The purge valve, controlled by the PCM, is found in the engine compartment. In terms of maintenance, fuel odors indicate potential issues which could be attributed to the fuel filler cap, damaged hoses, or the EVAP canister. A "whooshing" sound upon opening the gas cap indicates excessive vapor pressure, necessitating checks of the hoses and the vapor vent valve. When replacing components, the EVAP canister purge valve on four-cylinder models is located near the cylinder head, while on V6 models, it's near the intake manifold. For both, the electrical connector must be disconnected, hoses labeled and detached, and the purge valve removed from its bracket. The EVAP canister is beneath the vehicle and requires the removal of its cover, hoses, electrical connectors, and mounting bolts. If replacing the canister, the fuel tank pressure sensor and vent shut valve should be transferred from the old canister. The fuel tank pressure sensor is retained by a clip on the canister and should be replaced with a new O-ring during installation. The vent shut valve is found in the canister and is removed by prying open its locking tabs. Upon reinstallation, a new O-ring is necessary.
