Honda Del Sol Wheel Cylinder

Honda Del Sol Wheel Cylinder forces the rear brake shoes to contact the drum for firm and predictable power to bring the car to a stop. Inside the Wheel Cylinder are twin pistons, cup seals, an expander spring, and dust boots that are fed from the fluid that enters the bore center and pushes the pistons outwards. Early Del Sol units applied cast iron Wheel Cylinder bodies; later Honda versions switched to lighter aluminum, but both are based on the same two-piston action. A bleeder screw at the top allows air out during servicing. Keeping each Wheel Cylinder dry is important as moisture pitting the bore will result in leaks that reduce braking force and lower the Honda pedal. Regular shoe checks allow you to remove the boot and check that the Wheel Cylinder remains free of dirt. In case fluid splashes out, a fresh Wheel Cylinder keeps your Honda Del Sol safe.

Honda Del Sol Wheel Cylinder Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: What should be done if the wheel cylinders leak on Honda Del Sol?
    A:
If the wheel cylinders leak, they must be replaced with new ones as rebuilding is not recommended by the manufacturer. To begin, raise the rear of the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands, blocking the front wheels to prevent rolling. Remove the brake shoe assembly and clean all dirt and foreign material from around the wheel cylinder. Unscrew the Brake Line fitting without pulling the brake line away from the wheel cylinder, then remove the two wheel cylinder retaining bolts. Detach the wheel cylinder from the brake backing plate and place it on a clean workbench, immediately plugging the brake line to prevent fluid loss and contamination. If the brake shoe linings are contaminated with brake fluid, install new brake shoes and clean the drums with brake system cleaner. For installation, apply RTV sealant to the mating surface of the wheel cylinder and the brake backing plate, position the cylinder, and connect the brake line without tightening the fitting completely yet. Install and securely tighten the mounting bolts, then tighten the brake line fitting and install the brake shoe assembly. Finally, bleed the brakes and check brake operation before driving the vehicle in traffic.
