Q: What is the purpose and function of the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) and Air Bag on Honda Ridgeline?
A: The rest of the cars contain a Supplementary Restraint System (SRS), which is commonly known as airbags. They are intended to safeguard the driver and front seat passenger in case of a head-on or frontal accident. Crash sensors, which set off the airbags, can be found in the SRS control unit attached to the steering wheel and inside the dash at passenger's end. Behind the front seats, there are also side-impact airbags. Some models have pre-tensioners on their seat belts that reduce slack during collision. The Steering Wheel Airbag Inflator Module for Driver (inflatable cushion) is situated in the center part of the steering wheel; it gets turned on due to an electrical signal from its clockspring assembly going through it. The other airbag inflates when that bag splits open; it is placed on top of the instrument panel facing forward-outward. SRS Control Unit feeds current to this equipment and checks for faults each time vehicle starts. To disarm this system, turn wheels towards straight position, put key into lock position and remove negative battery terminal for at least 3 minutes. While transporting module containing an airbag, keep away from body and place it with an opening side upward anywhere safe enough. It would be wrong to measure resistance over any SAS component or wiring using electrical test equipment as this can result in accidental deployment of an air bag. Do not perform any electric welding operations on vehicles equipped with safety cushions without first disconnecting all power supplies connected to such cushions' electrical connectors . Live Air Bag Modules Or Seat Belt Pretensioners Must Be Returned To A Dealer Service Department Or Qualified Repair Shop For Safe Deployment And Disposal. Although instructions for removing/installing driver's side air bag module and clockspring are available; however removing passenger's side air bag or side-impact air bag is not recommended unless professionally instructed.
