Q:
Where is the Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor Located? Posted by Customer
A:
The Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor is a Hall Effect switching device that sends a "square-wave" signal to the PCM. On 1997 and earlier 3.2L engines, the CMP sensor is located in the upper front left corner of the timing belt cover, near the camshaft sprocket, while on 1998 and later models, the CMP sensor is located at the front of the right cylinder head, on the inside surface of the head. On 2.2L engines, the CMP sensor is located in the top of the front part of the cylinder head, between the camshaft sprockets. To replace the CMP sensor, disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal, unplug the electrical connector, remove the retaining bolt and loosen the timing belt cover stud enough to pull the CMP sensor straight up. Inspect the sensor O-ring for cracks and leaks and lubricate the new O-ring with clean engine oil. Installation is the reverse of removal.
