The EGR system is used to lower NOx emission levels caused by high combustion temperatures by recirculating a small amount of exhaust gases into the intake manifold. Early EGR systems are equipped with either a Thermal Vacuum Valve or an Electronic Vacuum Regulator Valve, while 1996 and later EGA systems are fully controlled by the PCM. To check the EGA system operation, bring the engine up to operating temperature and, with the transmission in Neutral, allow it to idle for 70 seconds. Open the throttle abruptly so the engine speed is between 2,000 and 3,000 rpm and then allow it to close. If the EGA valve stem does not move, check all of the hose connections to make sure they are not leaking or clogged. If the EGR valve is not receiving vacuum, the carburetor or throttle body unit must be removed to check and clean the slotted port in the throttle bore and the vacuum passages and orifices in the throttle body. When buying a new EGR valve, make sure that you have the right EGR valve. Some models are equipped with an EGR gas temperature sensor mounted near the EGR valve, installed into the EGR tube. The linear EGR valve feeds small amounts of exhaust gas back into the intake manifold and then into the combustion chamber, independently of intake manifold vacuum. To replace the EGR valve, disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery, remove the air cleaner housing assembly, detach the vacuum line from the EGR valve, raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands, remove the EGR pipe from the exhaust manifold, remove the EGR valve mounting bolts, remove the EGR valve and gasket from the manifold, clean the mounting surface of the EGR valve, install a new gasket and the EGR valve and tighten the bolts securely, connect the electrical connector onto the EGA valve, disconnect the electrical connector from the EGR gas temperature sensor and using and open-end wrench, remove the sensor from the intake manifold, and disconnect the electrical connector from the EGR valve.
