Start by detaching the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Then, remove the distributor cap and rotor. If necessary, remove the distributor from the engine to access the terminals of the pick-up coil. Detach the pick-up coil leads from the module before testing or removing the pick-up coil.

To check the coil for opens and grounds on 3.1L V6 models, use an ohmmeter to check the coil grounds, primary resistance, and secondary resistance. To replace the coil, unplug the coil high tension wire and both electrical leads, remove both mounting nuts, and then install the coil in the reverse of the removal procedure. For 2.3L and 2.6L four-cylinder models, detach the primary electrical connector from the coil, check to make sure the coil is receiving battery voltage with the ignition key ON (engine not running), and then use the ohmmeter's low scale to check the primary resistance and the high scale to check the secondary resistance. To replace the coil, unplug the coil high tension wire and both electrical leads, remove both mounting nuts, and then install the coil in the reverse of the removal procedure. For Distributorless Ignition System (DIS) models, special testing equipment is required and the vehicle should be checked by a dealer service department. For 1993 through 1995 3.2L V6 models, disconnect the negative battery cable, disconnect the spark plug wires, unplug the electrical connectors from the PCM, power supply and crank angle sensor, remove the three ignition coil mounting bolts, and then install the coil in the reverse of the removal procedure. For 1996 and later 3.2L V6 models, disconnect the negative battery cable, disconnect the electrical connector and remove the coil pack retaining screws, pull straight up on the coil pack to remove it, and then install the coil in the reverse of the removal procedure. For 2.2L four-cylinder models, disconnect the negative battery cable, remove the spark plug cable cover bolts with a 5 mm Allen wrench, unplug the spark plug wires from the spark plugs, disconnect the electrical connector from the ignition coil/ignition control module assembly, remove the three ignition coil/ignition control module retaining bolts, and then install the coil in the reverse of the removal procedure.
