Q:
How Do I Replace the Cooling Fan Motor on My Honda Odyssey? Posted by Customer
A:
All models have two complete fan circuits - one for the condenser and one for the radiator. If the engine is overheating and the cooling fan assembly is not activating when the engine temperature is high, first check all fuses. If they are intact, unplug the fan motor electrical connector. To test either fan motor, disconnect the connector and use jumper wires to power the fan directly from the battery. If the fan doesn't function, replace the motor. Make sure to also test the condenser fan motor. If the radiator fan motor is working, but not activating when the engine heats up, it might be a relay issue. Locate the fan relays in the engine compartment fuse/relay box. Test the relay, and if they're functioning, test the radiator fan switches. These switches, based on engine temperature, control the fan operations. They can be checked using an ohmmeter. If all components are operational, inspect all wiring and connections to the fan motors. For replacement on models from 2004 and before: Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. Secure the vehicle, raise the front, and remove the lower splash pan from beneath the radiator. Take off the radiator cover, drain the cooling system, and if the coolant is still good, it can be reused. Remove the wiring harness clamp, vacuum hose, and radiator bracket. Extract the battery and battery tray, and disconnect the fan wiring connectors. Remove both the upper and lower radiator hoses. Disconnect the automatic transaxle hoses from the radiator. Remove the radiator and condenser brackets. For 2005 and later models: Disconnect the breather hose and air intake duct. Remove the battery and tray. Depending on the model year, either remove the grille top cover or the front bumper cover. Disconnect any interfering hoses, wiring, and clamps. Remove the coolant reservoir. For all models: Extract the upper bolts and slightly loosen the lower bolts of each fan shroud. Lift the fan(s) from the engine compartment. To separate the fan from the motor, remove the motor shaft nut. To detach the fan motor from the shroud, remove the mounting screws. Installation is the reverse of the removal process. Lastly, reconnect the battery.
