  Q: How Can I Diagnose and Replace a Malfunctioning Catalytic Converter?

  A: A catalytic converter (or catalyst) is an emission control device in the exhaust system that reduces certain pollutants in the exhaust gas stream. Four-cylinder models have a single Three Way Catalytic Converter (TWC) underneath the vehicle, while V6 models have three catalysts: two Warm Up-Three Way Catalytic Converters (WU-TWCs) integral components of the exhaust manifolds for the front and rear cylinder heads, and a Three Way Catalytic Converter (TWC) underneath the vehicle. To diagnose a malfunctioning converter, take it to a dealer or authorized emission inspection facility, or use a vacuum gauge to diagnose the effect of a blocked exhaust on intake vacuum. To replace a converter, raise the vehicle and place it securely on jackstands, remove the upstream and downstream Oxygen Sensors, remove the heat shield bolts and heat shield, remove the nuts that attach the forward and rear flanges of the converter to the exhaust system, and install the new converter with a new gasket and tighten the flange nuts securely.
