All models come standard with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), or air bag, for the driver and front seat passenger; in a head-on or frontal crash, the air bags will help reduce the risk of serious injuries. Depending on the model of the car, it uses a single crash sensor on the 2001 models or a dual sensor on the later models, with airbag assemblies on the steering wheel and under the passenger side of the dashboard. Further, 2002 and later models have modulated side-impact airbags in the front seat back. The following are included in the pyrotechnics : airbags, seat belt restraints, and specific seat belt pretensioners, which is pyrotechnic device that eliminate slack in belts during strangulating impacts. The driver's side airbag inflatable module is on the inner side of the steering wheel and getting an electrical signal the inflator in the module fires to quickly inflate the airbag. The location of this air bag is closer to the passenger seat than the driver's side and is substantially bigger for it, installed behind the dashboard by the glove compartment pocket where it has a textured trim cover with the touch line running down its center which separates when inflated. The SRS control unit provides power to the airbag system and tests its operation every time the vehicle is started, if its operation is normal the "SRS" light is turned on. When in the vicinity of SRS parts, certain measures should be adhered to for instance the key should be turned to the Lock position, and the negative terminal of the battery disconnected. When dealing with airbag modules the opening must be directed away from the body, and electrical testing of SRS components is not allowed to prevent deployment. Air bag modules or seat belt pretensioners shall be re-cycled through a live qualified service department for proper disposal. To replace the driver side airbag module one has to pull out the steering wheel whilst for the side passenger airbag one has to disarm the system, pull the glove box and disconnect the airbag connector and patiently release the module from the dashboard. The same sequence is applied in the installation; every component is fastened and the battery connected. Side-impact airbags, generally, can be re-installed only if necessary by a qualified repair shop after a problem has been detected.
