If the CV joints are worn-in which case the entire unit needs to be overhauled-consider all positions before starting work, as complete rebuilt drive axles can be procured on exchange basis, to save both time and energy. If you have decided to rebuild a CV joint, you should take this into consideration when assembling the drive axle, the prices and availability of parts. Begin at the CV boot withdrawal from the car with the subsequent fixation of it in the vise using metal jaws which are to be covered with wooden or felt parts. If there is some uncertainty of the state of the outer boot it is recommended to replace it by removing both boot clamps and shifting the boot to the middle of the drive axle. From there draw alignment marks between the outer race and the tri-pot bearing assembly then remove the outer race. After that, it's necessary to take out the snap-ring at the end of the axleshaft, fasten the bearing rollers with tape and, using a brass drift and hammer, take out the tri-pot bearing assembly. Thoroughly remove the old grease from outer race and tri-pot assembly; apart and reassemble them in a way that does not compound parts; check for abnormal wear. During reassembly, the splines of the axleshaft can be covered with tape in order to protect the new boot; after that, the latter should be slid over the axleshaft and the tri-pot assembly with the outer snap-ring installed. CV joint grease should be applied to the inner bearing surfaces; also, the outer race should be packed with grease; the marks made before should align. This is done by locating the bottom of the boot in the grooves, fixing the length of the drive axletube to the specified size and finally balancing the pressure on the boot with the help of a blunt headed screwdriver. Replace the clamps of new boots and make sure that these clamps are tightened adequately. For the outer CV joint, the inner CV joint must be taken off and this must be dismantled, and if there is a dynamic damper then the position of this must be marked. Clean the inner and outer CV joints using solvent and the appearance of them has to be checked for signs of wear and if there is then they need to be replaced. Weld the new outer boot on axleshaft, lubricate then install new clamps. If provided, slide the dynamic damper to fit over the shaft so that it is in position marked prior to the procedure and install a new retaining ring. Last but not least, tighten and grease the inner CV joint and install the drive axle.

The driveaxle boots should be inspected for tears, cracks, and loose clamps.
