The major components of the disc brake system are the brake pads, the caliper and the rotor (disc). The caliper is similar in function to the wheel cylinder used with drum brakes and the rotor is similar to the brake drum used in drum brakes. To remove the brake pads, the lower caliper retaining bolt must be removed and the pad shim and pad retainers must be removed from the caliper. To install, the caliper must be cleaned thoroughly and the brake rotor must be checked for grooves or cracks and machined or replaced as necessary. The brake caliper must be removed from the vehicle to overhaul it, and the piston, boot, clip, and seal must be removed from the bore. The brake disc must be raised and supported, the caliper assembly must be removed, and the retaining screw must be removed from the brake rotor to remove it. To install the disc, the reverse of the removal procedure must be followed. The brake disc must be inspected for circular scores, disc run out, and disc parallelism.

To remove and install the brake caliper, brake pads and brake disc, the vehicle must be raised and safely supported, the wheel and tire assembly removed, the caliper shield removed, the parking brake cable disconnected, the banjo bolt removed and the brake hose disconnected. The caliper, pads, shims and pad retainers must then be removed.
