- A:The disc brake system consists of brake pads, caliper and rotor (disc). The caliper works similarly to the wheel cylinder used in drum brakes, while the rotor is similar to the brake drum used in drum brakes. The caliper forces the brake pads inward to squeeze the rotor and stop the vehicle, which is the main advantage of disc brakes over drum brakes. To remove and install the brake caliper, brake pads and brake disc, the vehicle must be raised and safely supported, the wheel and tire assembly removed, the caliper shield removed, the parking brake cable disconnected, the banjo bolt removed and the brake hose disconnected.
