Q:
How to replace the master cylinder in Honda Pilot? Posted by Customer
A:
For the HONDA PILOT/RIDGELINE and 2006 and earlier ACURA MDX models, start by removing the air intake duct. Disconnect the electrical connectors for the fluid level sensor and siphon as much fluid as possible from the reservoir using a syringe, like an old turkey baster. Place rags under the fluid fittings and have caps or plastic bags ready to cover the line ends once disconnected. Brake fluid can damage paint, so exercise caution during this procedure. Using a flare nut wrench, loosen the fittings at the brake line ends where they connect to the brake master cylinder. After slightly pulling away the brake lines from the brake master cylinder, plug their ends to prevent contamination. Next, remove the brake master cylinder mounting nuts and take out the brake master cylinder from the engine compartment, ensuring no fluid spills. If installing a new brake master cylinder, transfer the reservoir to the new brake master cylinder and use new seals. For the installation, first bench bleed the new brake master cylinder. Mount it in a vise, attach bleeder tubes to the outlet ports, and fill the reservoir with the recommended brake fluid. Push the pistons into the brake master cylinder to expel air, repeating until no air bubbles remain. Remove bleed tubes, plug the open ports, and cap the reservoir. Place the brake master cylinder over the power brake booster studs, tightening the attaching nuts finger tight. Install a new O-ring into the sleeve, thread brake line fittings into the brake master cylinder, fully tighten the mounting nuts and then the brake line fittings. Refill the brake master cylinder reservoir, bleed it, and the brake system. Reinstall the air intake duct and, if necessary, reattach and adjust the accelerator and cruise control cables. Test the brake system operation before regular use. For the 2007 ACURA MDX models, the power brake booster pushrod length must be checked and adjusted for proper brake master cylinder installation. Due to the recessed pushrod in the booster, special tools are needed, and it's advised to tow the vehicle to a qualified dealer service department or repair shop for brake master cylinder replacement.
