The rear cover of Dana and Saginaw models reveals their identity through its shape which differs from a 12-bolt Dana pattern to an 11-bolt Saginaw pattern. The rear differential cover on Dana units adopts an uneven shape that uses 12 bolts while the Saginaw configuration features an oval cover design with an 11-bolt arrangement. Begin Saginaw rear axle maintenance by lifting the vehicle's rear portion then securing it for support before dismounting the wheel followed by the brake drum. Start by popping off the pressed steel cover which ends in diffusion housing so that the lubricant can drain out. Drain the differential oil by removing the lock bolt from the pinion shaft before extracting the shaft far enough to free the axleshaft ends. To remove the C-lock from the inner end you need to push the outer end of the axleshaft while being careful to avoid harming the oil seal. To install the components follow the removal steps while tightening the lock bolt and adding a new cover gasket. The differential requires a correct amount of the specified lubrication. The process for oil seal replacement includes proper removal of the axleshaft combined with removal of the old oil seal which needs greasing of the recess area before installing the new oil seal with the lips facing inside. The removal of bearings starts with removing the axleshaft and oil seal followed by using either a bearing puller or a homemade tool to extract the bearing. Apply lubrication to the new bearing then deeply insert it into the recess so it becomes fully visible from its outer end. Table your disposal of the old oil seal before you install a new one along with reinstallation of the axleshaft.
