Before performing any tests on the Fuel Level Sensor, completely fill the tank with fuel. Raise the vehicle and support it securely with jackstands. Working under the vehicle near the fuel tank, disconnect the Fuel Level Sensor electrical connector. Position the ohmmeter probes into the electrical connector and check the resistance, ensuring to disconnect the Fuel Level Sensor harness for early systems; it should read approximately 120 ohms when empty and 17 ohms when full, using the 200-ohm or low scale on the ohmmeter. With the fuel tank completely full, the resistance should be approximately 17 ohms, around 60 to 100 ohms when half full, and approximately 120 ohms for early models or 200 ohms for late models when empty. If the readings are incorrect, replace the sensor. A more accurate check can be made by removing it from the fuel tank and checking its resistance while manually operating the float arm. If the readings remain incorrect, replace the sensor. To replace, raise the vehicle and support it securely with jackstands, then disconnect the Fuel Level Sensor electrical connector. Remove the mounting screws and carefully lift the sensor from the tank, angling the float assembly out without damage. Installation is the reverse of removal, ensuring to use a new gasket.
