The Intake Manifold Temperature Sensor is located on the air intake duct. On 3.2L engines, it's near the throttle body; on 2.2L engines, it's about midway between the air cleaner housing and the throttle body. The Intake Manifold Temperature sensor is a thermistor which changes its resistance in proportion to engine. Low temperatures produce a high resistance value; high temperatures produce low resistance values. The PCM supplies a 5-volt reference voltage to the Intake Manifold Temperature sensor. The voltage signal returned to the PCM will change according to the temperature of the incoming air. The voltage will be high when the air temperature is cold and low when the air temperature is warm. By measuring the voltage, the PCM is able to calculate the temperature of incoming air. The PCM uses the Intake Manifold Temperature signal to adjust spark timing in accordance with air density. A failure of the Intake Manifold Temperature sensor will cause the PCM to set diagnostic trouble code P0112 or P01To check the Intake Manifold Temperature sensor, disconnect the two prong electrical connector and turn the ignition key ON but do not start the engine. Measure the reference voltage. The voltmeter should indicate 5-volts. If the voltage signal is not correct, have the PCM diagnosed by a dealer service department. Measure the resistance across the sensor terminals. The resistance should be high when the air temperature is low. Start the engine, wait awhile and let the engine reach operating temperature. Turn the ignition off, disconnect the Intake Manifold Temperature sensor and measure the resistance across the terminals. The resistance should be low when the air temperature is high. If the sensor does not change resistance as indicated, replace it. To replace the Intake Manifold Temperature sensor, disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. Unplug the electrical connector from the Intake Manifold Temperature sensor. The Intake Manifold Temperature sensor is installed in a rubber grommet. To disengage the sensor from the grommet, pull on it while rocking it from side to side. While the Intake Manifold Temperature sensor is removed, inspect the condition of the grommet. If it's hard, cracked or deteriorated, replace it. Installation is the reverse of removal.
