    Q:
How to Replace the Rear Brake Shoe Set and Parking Brake Shoe on a Honda Civic? Posted by Customer
    A:
To begin the task tighten up wheel lug nuts before elevating the rear part of the vehicle with jack stands which must be appropriately supported by blocking front wheels to stop rolling. Open the parking brake and then remove the tire wheel. Two 8 X 1.25 mm bolts need to be inserted into the drum's face and alternated between the screws for separating the drum from the hub. To extract a drum that is stiff to remove check that the parking brake is released completely; otherwise you can manually retract brake shoes while removing the backing plate plug before adjusting the star wheel. Check the drum for damage since replacement or machining is needed for any detected issues. The brake shoe assembly needs cleaning with brake system cleaner while avoiding the use of compressed air. Replace the brake shoes while first removing all components including upper return spring, adjuster lever spring, adjuster lever, hold-down spring, leading shoe, adjuster, and hold-down spring from the trailing shoe. Clean adjuster components as you perform their disassembly and apply lubrication to moving parts and then treat the backing plate's shoe contact regions with lubricant. Reinstallation requires proper connection of the parking brake lever followed by implementation of the trailing shoe then adjuster then lower return spring and leading shoe then hold-down spring then adjuster lever then upper return spring and adjuster lever spring followed by wheel adjustment which enables the drum to slide over the shoes. Verify the drum for any visible cracks after which reinstallation may require resurfacing when needed. After securing the brake drum it is necessary to readjust the star wheel until the shoes gently touch then reinstall the plug. Proceed with the wheel mounting before vehicle leveling and adjusting the lug nuts tightly followed by multiple brake usage to make brake checks. Ensure precise brake assessment.
