2002 Honda Passport Axle Shaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Axle Shaft on 2002 Honda Passport?
A: If the CV joints appear worn, as are most often the case when the boots have been damaged, it is advisable to consider all possibilities before beginning the overhaul process, because completely rebuilt axle shafts are available as repairable exchange units to save time and effort. Start with the withdrawal of the axle shaft from the car and then fix it in a vise but with protective wooden surfaces. Saw off and throw away the boot clamps and then cover the boot and gently remove the wire ring ball retainer on the outer race. The outer race of the new bearing assembly should be taken off and the extra grease washed away. Remove the snap-ring, and slide the inner bearing assembly off the axle shaft, noting the orientation of the inner race and cage. Gently take the balls out of the cage, turn the inner race in order to have its holes lined up with those of the cage, and pull it out. Wipe all components with solvent, and check all parts for signs of wear and breakage, head pointing out that shiny areas on the gears are to be expected. For reassembly put the inner race into the cage so that matchmarks of both components are at the same point and force the balls into the cage windows. Cover the spline area of an axle shaft with tape, then slide the boot with clamp in position to be followed by the installation of inner race and cage assembly with the bulge positioned at the end. Mount the snap-ring, the outer race is greased, the inner assembly is also greased. Place the outer race of the bearing over the inner race and fasten the wire ring retainer onto position. Place the boot in the groove, set the length of the joint, and make a balance of internal pressure in the boot. The boot clamps should then be fitted and fastened before the reinstallation of the axle shaft. For the outer CV joint, this is of non-serviceable type, if damaged the whole axle shaft assembly is replaced. Take out the axle shaft, clamp the latter in a vise and using an axe, cut off the boot clamps. Subsequently, the inner CV joint and its boot have to be withdrawn and the outer CV joint cleaned in solvent checking for wear/misuse and replace the entire axle shaft in case of any misuse. The new outer boot and clamps need to be fitted, the outer CV joint has to be re-packed with grease as well as the inside of the new boot. After that, place the outer boot to the CV joint, put new clamps and after that reassemble the inner CV joint and the boot and then the axle shaft.
