Q: How can external engine components be removed more easily when working with an engine on 2015 Honda Civic?
A: If the engine is mounted on a portable engine stand, the external components are much easier to remove and often it is possible to rent a stand for a few dollars from the equipment rental yard. When the engine is to be mounted on the stand the flywheel/driveplate should be taken out. If a stand is not available then external parts of the engine can be removed but this has to be done when the engine is blocked on the floor and special care has to be taken that the engine does not tilt or drop down. During the procurement of a rebuilt engine, all the peripherals have to be detached from the external components and are used on the new engine; these include clutch and flywheel for manual transaxle models, drive plate for the automatic transaxle, emissions parts, engine support brackets, engine back plate, intake and exhaust manifold, fuel injection systems, oil filter, ignition and spark plugs, thermostat and housing, and water pump. Special care should be taken when uninstalling such parts as remembering the position of gasket, seals, spacers, pins, brackets, washers, bolts, among others is important during assembly. If procuring a short block, the timing chain or belt, cylinder head(s), oil pan, oil pump pick-up tube, oil pump, oil jets and water pump should be removed to turn in the old short block to the rebuilder as core.
