  Q: How Do I Replace the Fuel Pump/Fuel Gauge Sending Unit?

  A: Relieve the fuel system pressure and remove the fuel filler neck cap to relieve any pressure inside the fuel tank, then disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal and remove the carpeting from the floor of the trunk. Remove the fuel pump access cover screws and access cover, disconnect the electrical connector from the fuel pump/Fuel Level Sensor, disconnect the quick-connect fitting for the fuel supply line, and on non-SULEV models, remove the fuel pump/Fuel Level Sensor locknut. On SULEV models, remove the six fuel pump retaining nuts. Carefully angle the fuel pump/Fuel Level Sensor out of the tank to protect the float arm and float from damage, inspect the seal for cracks, tears and deterioration, and if it's damaged, replace it. Install a new gasket in the hole before installing the fuel pump/Fuel Level Sensor in the fuel tank, and when installing the fuel pump/Fuel Level Sensor on a non-SULEV model, make sure that the index mark on top of the fuel pump/Fuel Level Sensor is pointing between the two marks on the edge of the hole. When installing the mounting flange on a SULEV model or on a V6 model, make sure that the three asymmetrically-located notches in the mounting flange are aligned with their corresponding lugs on top of the pump assembly. Before reconnecting the fuel supply line quick-connect fitting, be sure to replace the 0-ring inside the fitting, and when installing the fuel pump/Fuel Level Sensor on an SULEV model, be sure to tighten the retaining nuts to the torque. Installation is otherwise the reverse of removal.

  Q: How Do You check Fuel Pressure and fuel pump?

  A: Verify fuel in the tank and fuel pump runs by turning the ignition switch to ON and listening for a brief whirring noise. To measure fuel pressure, use a fuel pressure gauge, fuel hose, and adapter. Relieve system fuel pressure and disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. Disconnect the quick-connect fittings and the fuel pressure gauge into the fuel system. Reconnect the battery and turn off the air conditioning and other electrical systems. Turn the ignition switch ON, start the engine, let it warm up, and check the fuel pressure, replacing the Fuel Pressure Regulator and Fuel Filter if necessary. Relieve the system fuel pressure and disconnect the negative battery terminal. You will unplug the testing rig and reconnect the fuel supply line quick-connect fitting. Reconnect the negative battery terminal. Start the engine and check for fuel leaks.

  Q: How to remove a Fuel Pump/Fuel Gauge Sending Unit?

  A: Relieve the system fuel pressure, then remove the fuel filler neck cap to relieve any pressure inside the fuel tank. Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal, remove the fuel pump/Fuel Level Sensor from the fuel tank and place it on a clean workbench. Disconnect the electrical connector for the Fuel Level Sensor, remove the Fuel Level Sensor from the fuel pump assembly, disconnect the fuel pump electrical connector and ground wire, remove the fuel pump retainer from the fuel pump housing, remove the rubber insulator from the fuel pump, remove the fuel strainer from the inlet end of the fuel pump, remove the fuel pump from the pump housing. If you want to replace the Fuel Filter, wash the fuel inlet strainer thoroughly in clean solvent, dry it off and inspect it for tears, cracks, clogging any other damage. If the strainer is damaged or worn, replace it, be sure to use a new retaining washer when installing the strainer. Before installing the fuel pump access cover, be sure to connect the cable to the negative battery terminal, start the engine and check for fuel leaks at the pump fuel line connection. If there are no leaks, install the access cover and the trunk carpet.
