Honda Civic Clutch Fork

The Honda Civic Clutch Fork converts pedal effort into fine clutch release so drivers can change gears without grinding. Working as a pivoting lever inside the bell housing, the Clutch Fork is pushed by either a hydraulic slave cylinder or by a simple cable and in turn presses the release bearing against the pressure plate to separate the engine and gearbox from each other. Early Civic designs preferred simple cable linkage valued for minimal weight and ease of adjustment, and later Honda versions introduced hydraulic actuation which self-adjusting and fits cramped bays. Both styles maintain the same Clutch Fork geometry, but hydraulic setups may eliminate the part altogether if a concentric slave cylinder is fitted since the pressure goes directly to the bearing eliminating the need for a Clutch Fork. Drivers feel it when the Clutch Fork is bent or has worn pivots and experience stiff pedals or missed shifts, which is why having a viable Clutch Fork helps every Honda Civic to enjoy light, predictable engagement and long Honda clutch life through the generations of Honda Civics.

Honda Civic Clutch Fork Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Remove and Install the Clutch Disc, Clutch Fork, Pressure Plate and Release Bearing on Honda Civic?
    A:
Access to the clutch components is normally accomplished by removing the transaxle, leaving the engine in the vehicle. To support the clutch disc during removal, install a clutch alignment tool through the clutch disc hub. Carefully inspect the flywheel and pressure plate for indexing marks and scribe or paint marks yourself if they cannot be found. Turning each bolt a little at a time, loosen the pressure plate-to-flywheel bolts and hold the pressure plate securely and completely remove the bolts, followed by the pressure plate and clutch disc. Ordinarily, when a problem occurs in the clutch, it can be attributed to wear of the clutch driven plate assembly (clutch disc). Inspect the flywheel for cracks, heat checking, grooves and other obvious defects and the lining on the clutch disc for at least 1/16-inch of lining above the rivet heads. Check for loose rivets, distortion, cracks, broken springs and other obvious damage. Remove the pilot bushing using a slide hammer and puller attachment and lightly lubricate the outside surface with grease before driving it into the recess with a bearing driver or a socket. Clean the flywheel and pressure plate machined surfaces with brake cleaner, position the clutch disc and pressure plate against the flywheel, align the indexing marks on the pressure plate and flywheel, insert the pressure plate-to-flywheel bolts, center the clutch disc, tighten the pressure plate-to-flywheel bolts, remove the alignment tool, lubricate the inner groove of the release bearing, place a small amount of grease on the release lever contact areas and the transaxle input shaft bearing retainer and install the clutch release bearing.
  • Q: How to replace the Clutch Release Bearing and Clutch Fork on Honda Civic?
    A:
Remove the transaxle. Remove the rubber boot from the clutch fork. Use a pair of pliers to squeeze the spring clip and pull the clutch fork off the ballstud. Slide the release bearing off the input shaft along with the clutch fork. Wipe off the bearing with a clean rag and inspect it for damage, wear and cracks. Don't immerse the bearing in solvent - it's sealed for life and immersion in solvent will ruin it. Hold the center of the bearing and rotate the outer portion while applying pressure. If the bearing doesn't turn smoothly or if it's noisy or rough, replace it. Considering the difficulty involved with replacing the release bearing, we recommend replacing the release bearing whenever the clutch components are replaced. Lightly lubricate the friction surfaces of the release bearing, ballstud and the input shaft bearing retainer with high-temperature grease. Install the clutch fork and bearing onto the input shaft. The remainder of installation is the reverse of removal.
