To replace or remove the intake manifold on carbureted engines, one has to open the drain plug and get a clean pan placed under the
Radiator and then drain the cooling system, finally, unplug the negative terminal on the battery. Thirdly, next step is the air cleaner and case and fourth one is to disconnect the carburetor from intake manifold. Remove the emission control hoses on the manifold T-joint, remove the hose above the T-joint leading to the air cleaner check valve and undo the electrical connectors from the thermoswitches. Make sure to unbolt the solenoid valve that is situated near the thermoswitch, and then unbolt the nuts that connect the intake manifold to the cylinder head diagonally and then do away with the manifold. Scrub the mounting surfaces of the gasket with a putty knife. For installation, transfer necessary components to a new manifold if replacing, use new gaskets and sealant if necessary and in the same manner reverse the following steps above while at the same applying water resistant sealer on the new gasket then connect all the hose s then tighten the nuts on the manifold to 16 ft lbs. When installing the carburetor, it is necessary to reinstall the insulator gasket and O-ring, and fasten the mountings nuts to the same level of torque. On fuel injected models take out the negative battery connection and drain the cooling system, label and disconnect the electrical connectors and vacuum lines and do a fuel pressure release. The throttle body assembly or fuel injector manifold must be removed as well as other parts such a fast idle control valve and the EGR valve if needed. Loosen and take off the intake manifold bolts and discard the gaskets if there is an upper and lower manifold chamber. Installation is reverse of removal; clean gasket mating surfaces, use new gaskets, torque intake manifold nuts in a criss cross pattern of 16 ft./lbs. For 1984-87 models, secure the upper manifold to the lower manifold, there should be bolt and nuts that are to be tightened to the specified torque, all hoses and wires should be connected before refilling of the cooling system.
