The procedure is much easier to perform with an empty fuel tank, so drain the fuel into an approved container using a siphoning kit or wait until the tank is nearly empty. The simplest method to drain the tank involves removing the
Fuel Pump/fuel level sensor module and siphoning or pumping the fuel out from there. After emptying the tank, reinstall the module without reconnecting the lines and electrical connector before removing the tank. Begin by removing the fuel tank filler cap to relieve pressure, then relieve the fuel system pressure. Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery, followed by disconnecting the lines and wiring from the fuel pump module at the top of the tank. Raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. For 2008 and earlier models, remove the crossmember stiffener plate, fuel tank shield, cross-beam behind the tank, and the fuel tank mount bracket from the rear. Detach the fuel filler hose and fuel feed line near the rear of the tank, and disconnect the EVAP hose at the left side. For 2009 and later models, remove the fuel tank guard, and for all except LX models, remove the fuel tank cover; for LX models, remove the splash shield. Remove the front floor cross-beam and fuel tank mounting bracket, then detach the fuel filler hose and fuel feed line near the rear of the tank, and disconnect the EVAP hose. Support the fuel tank with a floor jack and remove the fuel tank strap mounting bolts before taking the tank out of the vehicle, ensuring nothing is still connected. Installation is the reverse of removal, and finally, reconnect the negative battery cable.
