Honda Passport Accelerator Cable

Honda Passport Accelerator Cable allows the driver's right foot to instantly convert pedal movement to throttle movement, allowing the engine to breathe and build power. Running from the interior pedal to the throttle plate in the carburetor, the Accelerator Cable pulls the plate open as soon as the pedal is depressed, opening more passages that welcome the flow of air and pull more fuel from the float bowl for rapid acceleration. When the Accelerator Cable slackens, the plate shuts with the mixture going back to a leaner cruise setting. Early Honda Passport SUVs had a single braided steel Accelerator Cable that connected directly to the throttle lever and was perfectly matched to the one or two-barrel carburetors that were common on those engines. As higher output versions came along, later Honda Passport models retained the same basic cable but coupled it with four-barrel units whose primary and secondary butterflies opened in stages, the cable swinging the primaries first followed by the secondaries, which were placed in mechanical linkage and opened by a trigger when the travel of the cam reached its limit for a richer mixture at wide-open throttle. Despite the evolution of the carburetor, the basic advantages remained the same, namely precise, low-friction control and immediate pedal feedback. Drivers like this Accelerator Cable layout because it is still easy to inspect, instantly responsive, and largely self-adjusting over the typical service life of a Honda Passport powertrain.

Honda Passport Accelerator Cable Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install the accelerator cable on Honda Passport?
    A:
In order to get rid of the accelerator cable it is required to take out the mounting bracket from the valve cover and also to undo it with the cable with any other brackets. Following that, turn the throttle valve anti-clockwise and pull the cable end out of the slot. Remove the screws and the clips on the meanwhile of the car at the lower instrument trim panel at the side of the driver and then take out the trim piece. Take the cable end out and up from accelerator pedal recess; to separate the cable from the firewall, push the assembly through from the inside of the passengers' compartment. For installation, reverse the above process and make flexible components not to be routed within two inches of the moving parts unless provided for control. After installation of the new pedal, that is recommended for the test drive to confirm that there is no binding then fully depress and release the accelerator pedal. If necessary, use the sealant around the accelerator cable at the engine side of the firewall so that water does not penetrate the passenger compartment. The cable housing is free play adjustable, one needs to turn the cable bracket screw to move the housing up or down until the throttle valve closes properly.
