    Q:
How to remove a rear Trailing Arm and Steering Knuckle on Honda Civic? Posted by Customer
    A:
Place jackstands under the rear of your car to lift it off the ground, but secure it first. Loosen each lug nut holding the rear wheel. Block the front wheels so the car can't roll. After jacking up the car, use jack stands to keep it steady while you do the work. When lifting, place a jack under the trailing arm and take off the wheel first. Unbolt the top part of the arm where it meets the Steering Knuckle and remove the other bolt(s) on the inner end of the arm. Start installation by reversing the removal steps, lift the trailing arm with a floor jack until the wheels are at their typical ride height, and then secure all bolts and wheel lug nuts. Take off the brake hose and ABS sensor holder screws using the floor jack under the pinon again. Remove the rear underbody splash shield when necessary. Mark where the trailing arm adjusting cam connects to the knuckle bolt, then take off the bottom shock absorber bolt and the bolts holding the arm to the knuckle. Free the arm from the knuckle while keeping the knuckle in place with a bungee cord or wire. Remove these parts from the suspension system: 1) Disconnect the trailing arm's link to the stabilizer bar, 2) Pull out the shock absorber's lower mounting, 3) Remove the bolts that hold the front of the trailing arm to the chassis. Baseball cap first, lower the floor jack calmly, and pull off the coil spring. Unscrew and take out the bolt attaching the trailing arm to the car body. Also remove the trailing arm itself from the vehicle. To install, line up two marks - one on the adjuster cam and the other on the trailing arm - then raise the arm with the floor jack until it reaches standard ride height before tightening all fasteners. Remember to also tighten the wheel lug nuts, check the rear wheel alignment, and torque all bolts correctly. After discarding the brake drum or brake caliper and disc, take off the parking brake shoes, wheel speed sensor, and turn off the parking brake cable if your car has it. After positioning a floor jack under the trailing arm, take off the suspension arms from the knuckle and remove the entire rear wheel bearing hub assembly. If your car has drum brakes, take off the brake backing plate also attached to the brake shoes. Take off the fasteners from both the upper and lower part of the knuckle while noting where the cam bolt goes, so you can put them back later. Uninstall the parts in reverse order, keeping the trailing arm held up by a floor jack until you reach normal ride height. Then tighten all suspension arm hold downs to the right torque, and mark matchpoints on the toe adjusting cam. Snug down the caliper mounting bolts to their correct torque. Brake bleeding isn't needed but will require bleed line repair if any hydraulic lines were made loose. After installing, check and adjust wheel alignment if needed.
