To remove and install the timing belt on 1342cc and 1488cc engines, first turn the crankshaft pulley to Top Dead Center, then remove the pulley belt, water pump pulley, crankshaft pulley, and timing gear cover, marking the timing belt rotation direction. Loosen the tensioner adjusting bolt and pivot bolt without removing them, slide the timing belt off the camshaft timing gear and crankshaft pulley gear, and remove it from the engine. For camshaft timing gear pulley removal, take off the center bolt and use a pulley remover or brass hammer, ensuring the woodruff key does not fall inside the timing cover. Inspect the timing belt and replace it if it is over 10,000 miles old, oil-soaked, or worn on the leading edges. For installation, reverse the removal steps, ensuring the crankshaft pulley and camshaft timing gear pulley are in the top dead center position, aligning the marks on the camshaft timing gear parallel to the cylinder head with the woodruff key facing up. Avoid oil contact with the belt, handle it carefully to prevent bending or twisting, and install it with the arrow facing the same direction as during removal. After installation, adjust the belt tension by rotating the crankshaft counterclockwise 1/4 turn, then retighten the adjusting bolt and tensioner pivot bolt, taking care not to remove these bolts. For 1493cc and 1590cc engines, disconnect the negative battery cable, raise and support the driver's side of the vehicle, remove the driver's side wheel and wheel well splash shield, then remove the air conditioning compressor adjust pulley with bracket and belt if equipped. Remove the side engine mount bracket, loosen the alternator adjust bolt and through bolt, then remove the belt. Take out the engine support bolts and nuts, remove the side mount rubber, valve cover, crankshaft pulley bolt, and crankshaft pulley, followed by the timing belt upper and lower covers. Mark the timing belt rotation for easy installation, loosen the adjusting bolt, and remove the timing belt. Inspect the timing belt and replace it if it has been in service longer than 10,000 miles, is oil-soaked, or worn on the leading edges. Installation follows the reverse order of removal, adjusting the timing belt tension with the engine cold, and after installing, rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise 1/4 turn or 3 teeth on the camshaft pulley to apply tension, then retighten the adjusting bolt and tensioner pivot bolt, ensuring the crankshaft pulley bolt is re-torqued to specifications if it broke loose during adjustment.

The timing system is complex, and severe engine damage can occur if mistakes are made.
