To check the coil for opens and grounds on 3.1L V6 models, use an ohmmeter to check the coil grounds, primary resistance, and secondary resistance. To replace the coil, unplug the coil high tension wire and both electrical leads, remove both mounting nuts, and then install the coil in the reverse of the removal procedure. For 2.3L and 2.6L four-cylinder models, detach the primary electrical connector from the coil, check to make sure the coil is receiving battery voltage with the ignition key ON, and then use the ohmmeter's low scale to check the primary resistance and the high scale to check the secondary resistance. For Distributorless Ignition System (DIS) models, special testing equipment is required. For 1993 through 1995 3.2L V6 models, disconnect the negative battery cable, disconnect the spark plug wires, unplug the electrical connectors, and remove the three ignition coil mounting bolts. Installation is the reverse of removal. For 1996 and later 3.2L V6 models, disconnect the negative battery cable, disconnect the electrical connector and remove the coil pack retaining screws, pull straight up on the coil pack to remove it, and then install the coil in the reverse of the removal procedure. For 2.2L four-cylinder models, disconnect the negative battery cable, remove the spark plug cable cover bolts, unplug the spark plug wires, disconnect the electrical connector, and remove the three ignition coil/ignition control module retaining bolts. Installation is the reverse of removal.

For 3.1L V6 models, start by detaching the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Then, remove the distributor cap and rotor. If necessary, remove the distributor from the engine to access the terminals of the pick-up coil. Detach the pick-up coil leads from the module before testing or removing the pick-up coil. To check, connect one lead of an ohmmeter to the terminal of the pick-up coil lead and the other to ground. Flex the leads by hand to check for intermittent opens. The ohmmeter should indicate infinite resistance at all times. If it doesn't, the pick-up coil is defective and must be replaced. For replacement, remove the distributor if not already done. Mark the distributor tang drive and shaft for reassembly. Set the distributor in a vise with a shop rag to protect the shaft. Using a hammer and punch, remove the roll pin from the distributor shaft and gear. Remove the distributor shaft and the spring clip. Lift the pick-up coil assembly straight up and remove it from the distributor. Reassembly is the reverse of disassembly.For 2.3L four-cylinder models, start by detaching the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Then, remove the distributor cap and rotor. Have the distributor tested at a dealer service department or other qualified electronics repair facility. For replacement, remove the distributor if not already done. Remove the rotor from the distributor shaft. Remove the reluctor from the distributor shaft, ensuring not to lose the locking pin. Set the distributor in a vise with a shop rag to protect the shaft. Remove the screws that mount the pick-up coil to the breaker plate. Reassembly is the reverse of disassembly.
