    Q:
Are new and rebuilt cylinder heads commonly available for most engines at dealer parts departments and auto parts stores on Honda Del Sol? Posted by Customer
    A:
Several new and rebuilt cylinder heads are easily accessible for most engines from the dealer parts division, and auto-part shops. Because some disassembly and inspection tools might be required, as well as replacement parts may not be readily accessible, the home mechanic might find it more convenient and cost-effective to buy replacements for heads and so on, instead of taking apart and inspecting, not to mention reconditioning, the originals. To perform cylinder head disassembly, it is necessary to remove intake and exhaust valves and other related parts; as for the rocker arm assemblies and the camshaft, they should be removed, too. One has to ensure that the part is well labeled or has to ensure that the part is kept separately for rebinding at its rightful place. When you plan on removing the valves, it is worthy to label and store the valves and their bits in a more systematic manner. Sometimes it may be required to compress the springs on the first valve using a spring compressor, to remove the keepers by using a magnet or small needle-nose pliers and then by slowly releasing the compressor to finally remove the retainer, spring and the spring seat if any. Turn the valve out of the head and unscrew the oil seal from the guide; if it sticks, screw the valve back in and file the bearing surface and the keeper groove around the stem. This action must be done to the rest of the valves, keeping all the parts of each valve in a unified lot to facilitate rejoining later. As for the VTEC engines, be sure to sure to disconnect the Oil Control Orifice and O-ring s from the cylinder head. Pull all the valves and other associated parts from the head and neutrally clean it before all cleaning and inspection processes if a complete engine rebuild is being performed on the block before beginning the valve shims and lapping processes.

    Q:
What steps should be taken for thorough cleaning and inspection of the cylinder head and valve train components during an engine overhaul on Honda Del Sol? Posted by Customer
    A:
Intensive washing of the cylinder head and other associated with this part parts of the valve train together with their careful examination will allow to define the amount of necessary valve first during the further work on the engine. Start by removing all the gasket materials and sealants from the head gasket, intake and exhaust manifold surfaces but be very careful not to harm the cylinder head. Scrape off the accumulated deposits on the coolant passages and scrub with a stiff wire brush on the various holes. Deburr the threaded holes of course, with clean up to such size in taps; by compressed air if possible, remove corrosion and debris. Remove any dirt, oil or grease on the threads of the camshaft bearing cap bolt and the cylinder head using solvent, after which wipe with clean cloth and the use compressed air is recommended until the surface is very dry. Use decarbonizing chemicals where necessary but with due regard to the instructions issued above. Remove the rocker arms and remove the bearing caps; then clean all the parts with solvent then make sure that the parts are duly dried without interchanging the following parts: valve springs, spring seats, keepers and retainers for one valve only. Scrape off the large volumes on the valves with a motorized wire brush while avoiding the cross loading of the lots. Check for cracks and coolant leakage and other damages on the cylinder head and you may need to seek an automotive machine shop for a fix. Verify the head gasket mating surface for warpage using a straightedge and a feeler gauge and inspect the valve seats for pitting, cracking or burning that may be required professional valve reconditioning. Check the valve stem-to-guide clearance with a dial indicator and if you have any of the concerns about the valve guides take it to a machinist. Check each of the face of the valves for any sign of wear, deformation or cracks and check the margin widths and replace such valves as do not conform to the acceptable standard. On each valve spring, freely measured and examined for wear and pits, free length and its must no less than the prescribed length, it must be checked for squareness. Please check the springs retainers and keepers for their condition, that means they should be checked for signs or wear and cracks and if any of the part seems to be in bad condition then it must be replaced in order to avoid failure during operation. If action a results in a poor condition of the valve components, then reinstall the valves into the cylinder head.
