If the engine is on some form of portable pedestal, then the external parts are easier to be removed, and the pedestal can usually be hired from an equipment hire yard, else, the flywheel/driveplate has to be removed before the mounting. If a stand is not possible then various accessories and parts can be unbolted and pulled off with the engine positioned on the stand resting on the floor but one has to be more careful not to drop the engine. When getting a rebuilt engine, all external peripherals have to be taken off so as to be fitted onto the replacement engine; the driveplate, the ignition assembly, the emission components, engine mounts and brackets, the engine rear cover, intake and exhaust manifolds, fuel injectors and filter, oil filter, spark plug wires and spark plugs, water pump, and thermostat and housing. More often, when dismantling such complicated systems, it may be irrelevant or inconsequential to write down other aspects except for the installed position of gaskets, seals, spacers, pins, brackets, washers, bolts, and other such small items as may be relevant during assembly. If a short block is to be obtained the timing belt, cylinder heads, oil pan, oil pump pick-up tube, oil pump, and water pump should be removed to be turned in as the core to the rebuilder.

Before beginning engine reassembly, ensure you have all necessary new parts, gaskets, and seals, along with common hand tools, a 1/2-inch drive torque wrench, new engine oil, gasket sealant, and thread locking compound. If a short block was obtained, it will be necessary to install the cylinder heads, oil pump and pick-up tube, oil pan, water pump, timing belt and timing covers, and valve covers. To save time and avoid problems, install the external components in the following general order: thermostat and housing cover, water pump, intake and exhaust manifolds, fuel injection components, emission control components, spark plugs, ignition coils, oil filter, engine mounts and mount brackets, and drive plate.

A long block adds an oil pump, oil pan, cylinder head, valve cover, camshaft, and other components, all installed with new bearings, seals, and gaskets.
