    Q:
How to Replace a Timing Chain and Variable Timing Sprocket on a 3.1L V6 Engine on a Honda Passport? Posted by Customer
    A:
Loosen the nut on the negative terminal of the battery and pull the cable end and then remove the vibration damper. After that, remove the timing chain cover. It is recommended to visually check the conditions of the teeth on the sprockets before dismantling of the chain and sprockets, and the state of the chain for the presence of free motion. If either or both sprockets are worn out, they must be replaced with new ones For failure to do so, one is likely to experience below-average performance, poor power and low gas mileage. At least, if one of the three components is to be replaced, it is also necessary to replace the remaining two. If it is concluded that replacement is needed, insert the vibration damper mounting bolt into the circumstance and rotate the crankshaft to bring the numerals on the camshaft and crankshaft into one position of reference with the number one and four-pistons being at the top dead centre while the number four piston is in firing position. Loosen and then take out the three camshaft sprocket mounting bolts while with the screwdriver you have to ensure the camshaft sprocket doesn't turn, then the camshaft sprocket with the timing chain should be removed from the front of the engine, tapping the sprocket gently with the soft-face hammer if necessary. Only if the crankshaft sprocket must be removed, a gear puller should be applied. Slide the crankshaft sprocket on the crankshaft with the vibration damper bolt and a large washer or washers. Put moly-base grease or engine assembly lube on the thrust surface of the camshaft sprocket; place the timing chain over the camshaft sprocket with the slack downward. When the timing marks are lined up position the chain over the crankshaft sprocket and then clutch the camshaft sprocket in with the three bolts but avoid hammering as it may dislodge the welch plug at the rear of the engine. When the timing marks on the two sprockets are adjusted, apply a little engine oil on the chain and then put back other parts of the motorcycle in the reverse process of dismantle.
