- Q: How to Replace a Timing Belt and Variable Timing Sprocket on a 2.2L Four-Cylinder Engine on a Honda Passport?A:The timing system is quite intricate and since there may be severe damages on the engine if the wrong moves are made, it is reserved for expert operators only. In case of doubt one should seek advice from a specialist. First, unscrew the negative battery terminal then; you can now take off the serpentine belt. Remove the retaining nut of the engine harness cover then take off the timing belt cover. If removing crankshaft timing belt sprocket, use chain wrench on crank pulley, and free crankshaft sprocket bolt while at the same time cover pulley with rubber strip. Four crankshaft pulley bolts should be undone with rubber to be used to protect the vehicle's surface, in addition to the pulley itself. Take out two of the timing belt front cover bolts and the front cover in the process. Revolve the engine clockwise to bring the first piston to TDC on compression stroke by matching the notches of camshaft pulley with marks on the cylinder head cover, as well as bearing the crankshaft premature with the one on the timing cover. If the timing belt is to be reused, place the belt and rear cover in positions for directional travel. Rotate the tensioner clockwise to free the tension on the belt and turn the tensioner adjusting bolt to lock the arm thus removing tension on the belt. When installing timing belt do not twist or bend it and ensure that it does not come into contact with oil, coolant or fuels. Check for signs of contamination of the timing belt and for signs of general wear and if the belt has been working for over 50000M then replace. Inspect the tensioner and idler pulleys for noise, or rough feel; change any are worn. Check the timing belt sprockets for wearing and if so, then remove the camshaft and replace the seals. When replacing the sprockets the timing mark should be adjusted properly. If the crankshaft sprocket was loosened, then it has to be taken out and check the front oil seal and replace it if is necessary. With an electric starter, or after warming the engine, turn the crankshaft by hand at least two complete revolutions to feel resistance. It will also have to be ascertained that the timing marks on the camshaft and crankshaft sprockets have been lined with their respective stationary marks and that the water pump lugs are straightly aligned to the engine block. There will need to be a timing belt; before placing this make sure that the timing belt is on the drive side and that the tension of the timing belt needs to be on the tensioner that is part of the arm. When the crankshaft is rotated fully a total of four times, re-align the timing marks. Depending on whether one is putting on a new of used belt then adjust the pointer of the tensioner then tighten the tensioner bolt. Finally tighten the timing belt cover, the cover of the engine wiring harness, crank shaft pulley, the serpentine drive belt and reconnect the negative cable to the battery.
