- Q: How to remove and reinstall the components of the Timing Cover on a 2.4L engine on a Honda Civic?A:Unplug the black cable from the car battery, remove the valve from over the timing chain, and on Civics, take out the front cowl panel. First, loosen the lug nuts on the right front wheel, lift your car's front, and set it on two jackstands before taking out the right front wheel. Open up the under-engine area, empty engine oil, and take off the drivebelt. Unplug the drivebelt tensioner from the Timing Cover. Remove the crankshaft pulley. Disconnect the wiring going to the crankshaft position sensor and the other power connections that might get in the way. First, drain your cooling fluid. Next, unscrew the pipe mounting bolt that connects the oil cooler joint to the water pump (only if your car has this). Keep pulling the pipe back until it comes loose, then take off the O-ring. Put the jack under the engine but place a piece of wood below its head to keep the nozzle from touching the oil pan. First detach the engine mount and bracket from the right side, then remove the valve cover bolts to let go of both timing chain cover and gasket with the valve cover. Look closely at both the timing chain cover and block for damage. Wash the fixing parts carefully, being watchful not to scratch any engine surfaces made of aluminum. Make sure to update both the crankshaft seal and all involved surfaces by applying the RTV sealant: cylinder block surfaces matched to cover, main contact points on top, and oil pan areas showing wear. Also apply sealant to the thread holes. Thread in a fresh O-ring for the timing chain cover. Then place and secure the same cover back onto the motor block. Make sure all bolts set in their original spots. Loosen the bolts one at a time with your hands until the cover touches the block all around. Tighten the bolts to the recommended torque rating. Pop in a fresh O-ring to the oil cooler joint pipe, slide the pipe into place, then twist the bolt until you reach the right torque. Put the crankshaft drivebelt into position and tighten its bolts to the proper spec. Then install the crankshaft pulley. Unplug ground cable, engine mount, and right-side mounting bracket, then take off the valve cover. starting with removal of the bolts, then you pull the timing chain cover off while also clearing away the gasket between it and the block. Check and clean off all surfaces where the timing chain cover attaches to the block and the cover itself, being gentle with scraping since some engine parts are made of aluminum. If necessary, replace the crankshaft seal. Rub RTV silicone sealant onto both the block and cover mating areas where the upper engine contacts are, the oil pan attachment points, and just a small drop in the bolt hole threads. Put a new O-ring on the timing chain cover, then place the cover back onto the engine and fasten its bolts. Make sure the bolts go into their original spots. Hand-tighten the cover until it touches the engine block at every part. Attach the bolts and tighten them with the needed torque, place a new O-ring where the oil cooler meets the joint pipe, and put the pipe into the water pump, fastening the bolt to the specified torque. Put the drivebelt tensioner in place, then tighten the bolts to the correct force. Lastly, put on the crankshaft pulley. Fasten the wiring harness connectors back into place and use clamps to secure the wiring. Reassembels everything in reverse order of taking it apart. Adds recommended oil to the crankcase, replaces the cooling fluid, reconnects the car battery, turns on the engine, and looks for leaks, while making sure all fluid containers stay full.
