    Q:
How to Disconnect the Cable from the Negative Battery Terminal and Install a Timing Belt and Variable Timing Sprocket on a Honda Odyssey? Posted by Customer
    A:
Remove the cable cranking the car's battery from the negative terminal. Put the transaxle in Park or neutral and set the parking brake; apply the parking brake and block the rear wheels. Also take out the drivebelts, the alternator along with the power steering pump. To change crankshaft, take off the spark plugs and then align the number one piston at Top Dead Centre. Lose the lug nuts of the right front wheel, raise the front part of the car, and put it on jackstands then remove the right front wheel, and the right front inner fender splash shield. Jack up the engine with a floor jack placed under the oil pan and lay a block of wood on it and then remove the splash shield beneath the radiator. Take out the bolts and wiring harness retainer that secures the passenger side engine mount to the block, take out the mount and engine mount bracket as well as the engine oil dipstick tube. Remove the upper timing belt covers, note the timing belt's rotation direction if it is to be reused and align the timing marks. Crankshaft pulley can be removed using a strap wrench by loosening the crankshaft pulley bolt and realigning the timing marks if required. The lower timing belt cover and timing belt guide must be taken off, which installation should also be observed. To release the tension on the timing belt use a modified long hold-down bolt to hold the timing belt adjuster and then unbolt the engine mount bracket and slacken the idler pulley bolt to finally remove the timing belt. Camshaft sprockets also can be removed if it is required, although it is possible only if they do not turn during the operation. Check the state of sprocket teeth, the timing belt, and camshaft and judge the condition of the timing belt tensioner; replace it if it is worn. Clean the area around the timing belt and the teeth of the sprockets and install any sprockets which may have been removed along with their keys, then install the timing belt guide. Again, recheck the timing marks and place the timing belt clockwise / counter clockwise manner such that the arrow in the old belt appears in normal manner of its function. Replace the outer timing belt guide, torque the idler pulley bolt and, last but not least, take off the hold-down bolt. Rotate the crankshaft six revolutions anticlockwise to engage the belt and turn the crankshaft another six revolutions and look for the aligned timing marks at TDC. A keyway of the crankshaft pulley engages with the lower timing belt cover, and the bolt is drawn and tighten. Double check the marks on the timing cover and adjust as required before replacing the remaining components in reverse order, and reconnecting the battery. From tensioner adjustment, if removed, it is unbolted from the block, then retracted by squaring the holes in the rod and the body so that it is locked then re-bolted and tightened on the mounting bolts. Upon the completion of the timing belt installation, the pin should be pulled out.
