If the starter motor doesn't turn at all when the switch is operated, make sure the shift lever is in Neutral or Park or the clutch is fully depressed, the battery is charged and all cables at the battery and starter solenoid terminals are secure. If the starter motor spins but the engine doesn't turn over, the drive assembly in the starter motor is slipping and the starter motor must be replaced. If the starter solenoid doesn't click when the ignition switch is actuated, either the starter solenoid circuit is open or the solenoid itself is defective. To check the starter solenoid circuit, remove the push-on connector from the solenoid wire and make sure that the connection is clean and secure and the relay bracket is grounded. If the starter motor still doesn't operate, replace the starter motor or starter solenoid. If the starter motor cranks the engine at an abnormally slow speed, first make sure the battery is fully charged and all terminal connections are clean and tight. To determine the location of excessive resistance in the starter circuit, disconnect the ignition coil wire from the distributor cap and ground it on the engine, connect a remote control starter switch from the battery terminal of the starter solenoid to the S terminal of the solenoid, connect a voltmeter positive lead to the starter motor terminal of the starter solenoid, then connect the negative lead to ground and actuate the ignition switch.

Detach the cable from the negative terminal of the battery.
