    The Engine Control Module (ECM) adjusts the engine idle speed using the Idle Control Valve (ICV). As an intake throttle plate bypass, this valve allows a steady idling speed irrespective of the loads that the engine experiences. Minimum idle speed is set at the factory and should not be adjusted. Confirm outlet mounting, hoses, and connections before testing an Idle Control Valve. Start the motor and then unplug an Idle Control Valve while still on and it will reduce its speed down. If there are any idle problems afterwards just make sure you check them in the wiring harness or vacuum leaks. To replace an Idle Control Valve, one must remove the battery, take off the old valve with seals, clean surfaces, install new ones with new seals, and connect everything back up again.
