A/C Expansion Valve systems turn the high-pressure liquid refrigerant from the compressor to a form of low-pressure gas at the evaporator to cool the air stream that is to be supplied to the vents. This conversion usually takes place either by having a change of size of the tubing and many vehicles are fitted with a removable controlling orifice to one of the refrigerant lines at the firewall. In some models, a kind of a controlled orifice called 'A/C Expansion Valve' is incorporated. To get to the A/C Expansion Valve, the air conditioning system has to be discharged by a licensed technician; afterwards, the refrigerant lines connected to the A/C Expansion Valve are disconnected at the firewall, ways the heater core housing. The A/C Expansion Valve stud also has to be unscrewed, as well as the two bolts that hold the valve in place, and the valve itself can be pulled out; four O-rings should be replaced; the valve has to be inserted and fastened the other way round.
