1990 Honda CRX Transmission Assembly Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: What are the essential procedures and precautions for overhauling a Transmission Assembly on a 1990 Honda CRX?
A: Intake and exhaust piping must be very clean to overhaul the manual transaxle, the exterior must be washed off using high-pressure washer before dismantling in order to avoid the spread of contaminants to internal parts. Solvent is to be used to clean all the parts and components which are to be dried with compressed air only without using cloth or rag. Do not damage lube seals with scented material, use clean transaxle or synthetic oil for them and apply only unmedicated petroleum jelly in thrust washers. It is recommended to dip the aluminum bolt threads in clean transaxle oil before installation of the bolts and above all use anti-seize compound in order to avoid galling. Also in the disassembly you will disengage the reverse light switch, cable bracket, breather tube, bolts holding the transaxle housing to the clutch housing, sealing bolt holding the countershaft ball bearing and snap ring. Check clearances for the reverse shift fork and idler gear, and such items as interlock guide bolt, mainshaft, countershaft assemblies, and differential assembly are removed. Visually check all parts for wear signs and damage paying extra attention to the shift rod detents. For the mainshaft assembly, ensure that the following clearances are kept to standard while replacing any parts which maybe worn out;- During assembly it is best that all the needle bearing, synchro rings, and gears are arranged in the correct manner with ease of movement with a proper fit. Thrust clearance, therefore, is a process in which certain shims are fitted and distances are measured with an aim of achieving the appropriate measurements. The countershaft assembly also undergoes equal inspection and assembly of the numerous parts to check for wear or damage on any of them. Last but not the least, during the assembly of the transaxle, replace seals, bearings and other components with new ones and then make use of sealant in the correct specifications and then tighten bolts according to the torque specifications required to allow proper fit and functioning of the part.
