1996 Honda Prelude Transmission Assembly Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: What Are the Characteristics and Functions of Torque Production in Transmission Assembly on 1996 Honda Prelude?
A: The breathing characteristics of a typical internal combustion engine mean that it generates torque, that is, a twisting force around the crankshaft, in a limited way only at certain speeds, commonly up to 2500 rpm for most modern overhead valve pushrod engines after which the torque is considerably lower by 4500 rpm even though the engine speed is far higher, power output does not improve at increased speed. To control the ratio between engine and wheel speeds, a manual transaxle with a clutch is used, which makes it possible to apply engine torque to the transaxle input shaft gradually, and thus to start the car from a standstill. The transaxle alters the speed of the engine to wheel fashion by gears so that full power of the engine is translated to the wheel at low speed as well as at highway velocity. The main operation of a transaxle front-wheel-drive is achieved through the input shaft to the main shaft a little below and to the left of the input shaft, the gears of the main shaft interlocking with those of the input shafts in order to transfer power. All forward gears are in constant mesh and do not revolve round the shaft until the synchronizer and clutch are used; shifting gears involves 'unfreezing' one gear and 'freezing' another simultaneously, a technique known as the internal dog clutch that moves along the gear center and the shaft. The forward gears incorporate synchronisers which are friction members used to match the speed of the gear and shaft before engaging the toothed dog clutches.
