- Q: How to remove and install the rear Shock Absorber on 1998 Honda Prelude?A: Raise and secure your car, take off the trunk edge paneling and the top 2 mounting nuts for the struts. First, pull the cover over the upper ball joint, then remove the pin and bolt securing it. Slide a 10mm nut onto the ball joint, then pull the ball joint apart from the knuckle using a ball joint removal tool. Lowering the suspension by removing the strut mounting bolt at the bottom of the vehicle lets you safely take out the strut. When replacing the rear struts, use new self-locking nuts while installing, put the strut in place, and only loosely screw in the lower mounting bolt. Replace the top bolts and secure them tightly to 28 ft. lbs. (39 Nm). Rejoin the upper arm and knuckle, and apply 40-48 Nm (345-383 mkg) to the castle nut, before reinstalling its upper ball joint cover. Hold the car up with a floor jack to place weight on the strut, and fit the lower bolt in place. Wire it shut with 47 ft. lbs. (65 Nm) of force. Put the rear wheels on, set the car back down, make sure the rear wheels are tightened to 80 ft. lbs. (108 Nm), and then adjust the vehicle's rear wheel alignment to the proper position.
